🌴 Magnificent Mauritius
Your Gateway to Africa’s Most Underrated Island Escape
Hidden in the Indian Ocean and blending African, Indian, French, and Creole influences, Mauritius is where global cultures meet turquoise waters. Whether you’re flying in from Paris, Frankfurt, or connecting from the U.S., this island rewards the journey.
Honeymooners, digital nomads, and adventure seekers—you just found your next favorite island.
🌊 Why Mauritius Surprised Me
Mauritius isn’t just beaches and resorts. It’s another version of Bali—with a litany of Hindu temples. But then you also have a Mosque with its call of prayer right near Chinatown’s Gates.
You can easily grab a baguette, speak Mandarin or Hakka (客家), and then another language. It’s French, Creole, Tamil, and Hindi all spoken in one conversation. And it’s absolutely a place to set up your remote desk for a week—or a month.
Driving here? Super easy. I was worried I’d get a stick-shift rental car driving on the opposite side of the road. Nope! Not only did I get an automatic–the country is very flat. That made it easier to get used to left-hand traffic and renting a car gave me freedom to reach Le Morne, and secluded beaches. Just beware of changing weather conditions

🚗 Island Navigation Tips
- SIM Card: I used MyT for better coverage, but Emtel works fine too.
- Driving: Left-side driving. Be prepared for quick rainstorms and local wildlife on the roads.
- Cuisine: Try dholl puri, rougaille, and every variation of curry you can find. You won’t be disappointed.
- Language: English and French are official, but Creole spoken daily. I used French (a lot) and English second.
🌟 What I Loved Most
“I didn’t know that Mauritian food would be a mix of Indian and Chinese cuisine, all-in-one”
Mauritius stands alone like the smoke from an exposed diesel engine—it j just keeps puffing no matter what anyone thinks.
It’s an island that’s in the middle of the Indian ocean—yet crucial to geopolitics, especially to the United States.
That contrast is the same with its cuisine which I found amazing. Can’t get enough of Piment Rouge. One minute you’re eating a Chinese-influenced dish and the next one from the Indian subcontinent. You have all the dishes!
I walked up to a food shack in Flic en Flac and ended up talking in French and English with a Mauritian family over Chinese-dim-sum-type food with a golden beach out the corner of my eye. That’s Mauritius.
✅ TL;DR: Is Mauritius Worth It for Remote Work?
Fast WiFi, cultural immersion, and an optical illusion in the form of an underwater waterfall makes Mauritius a serious winner for your remote work destination or alternative vacation to Nice, France or Hawaii.
Why not move life at a slower pace, but in Africa? But not at the same time?
