Boston’s public transit system, affectionately called “The T,” is surprisingly efficient and budget-friendly – and yes, there’s even a FREE option to get you from the airport to downtown Boston upon arrival! However, keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for your return trip to the airport. This guide will walk you through your transportation options from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and how to make the most of The T during your Boston adventure.

Getting from Boston Logan Airport to Downtown (for FREE!)

Upon arrival at Logan Airport, forget about expensive taxis or rideshares. Instead, head to the curb outside your terminal and look for the sign for the Silver Line SL1. This Silver bus will shuttle you to South Station for absolutely no charge.

  • Board the Silver Line SL1 – This bus makes stops at each airport terminal, collecting passengers before heading towards the city.
  • First Major Stop: Seaport District – You can disembark here if you’re interested in exploring the Harpoon Brewery or attending seasonal events like their Halloween festival in October..
  • Final Stop: South Station – This is a hub where you can transfer to various subway lines, including the Red Line. For those heading into central Boston, switch to the Red Line towards Alewife and get off at Downtown Crossing (DTX) or continue to Charles/MGH for proximity to Massachusetts General Hospital and Beacon Hill.
Look for “T” Public Transportation after you retrieve your luggage.

Look for this placard that says “Silver Line.” This shows you that there are four stations until the final stop–South Station.

Navigating The T: Your Key to Boston

Once you reach South Station, you’ve officially entered the heart of The T. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Red Line to Downtown: Take the Red Line train towards Alewife. For easy access to downtown, get off at the Charles/MGH station. This stop puts you right by Massachusetts General Hospital, the historic Beacon Hill neighborhood, and the beautiful Charles River Esplanade (perfect for a scenic beer by the water).

  • Fun Fact: The Silver Line SL1 isn’t actually a train, but rather an electric bus that runs through a tunnel originally intended for a train line!

Returning to Boston Logan Airport

Buy a one-way ticket for $2.40.

When it’s time to return to Logan Airport, the process is just as straightforward:

  • Start at Your Hotel: Whether you’re near the MGH Red Line stop or at Hotel 1868 near Porter Square, head to the nearest subway station.
  • Travel to South Station: If you’re not already on the Red Line, make your way there and travel towards South Station.
  • Catch the Silver Line SL1: From South Station, take the Silver Line SL1 directly to Logan Airport. This part of your journey will be free.

Travel Tip: Keep in mind that The T often schedules track maintenance on weekends, which can lead to delays. Give yourself extra travel time and check the MBTA website for service alerts before heading out. Even better, use the ProximiT app to get real-time updates and avoid unexpected disruptions.

Make sure you look for the “South Bound” Red Line train. This train will take you to South Station, where you will then get on the Silver Line to BOS (Boston Airport).

While the MBTA offers text alerts for specific lines, ProximiT tends to be faster and more comprehensive.

When you see the “Board Here” sign, then you know you’re at the right stop to take the SL1 bus to the airport.
